Join us for a special weekend celebrating contemporary art at the Gallery, with over 60 free events including performances, workshops, films, family activities and talks by visiting artists and curators.

This weekend launches the new floor of galleries, featuring the most comprehensive collection of contemporary art in the country.

A significant new addition to this floor is the John Kaldor Family Gallery. One of Australia’s most passionate collectors of contemporary art, John Kaldor has gifted his extensive collection to the Gallery, spanning 50 years of works from the leading international and Australian artists of our time.

Exhibition talk by Edmund Capon and John Kaldor Sat 21 & Sun 22 May, 10.30am
Gallery director Edmund Capon and collector John Kaldor introduce and discuss the new galleries and works from the John Kaldor Family Collection.

Help create a Sol LeWitt wall drawing Sat 21 – Sun 22 May, all day
Sol LeWitt is known for his instructional wall drawings, which shifted traditional ways of
thinking about art in the 1960s. Participate in a rare opportunity to create a LeWitt drawing on the Gallery wall.

Artist talk by Tracey Moffatt Sat 21 May, 6.30pm
One of Australia’s most successful international artists discusses her work. Moffatt’s 1997 photographic series Up in the sky, which tells a dramatic story set in the Australian outback, is the inaugural exhibition in the new photography gallery.

Bodyweather dance performance Sat 21 May, 1pm
Bodyweather is a dance movement founded by butoh artist Min Tanaka, who worked with Eastern and Western visual artists including Nam June Paik and Robert Rauschenberg. Tess de Quincy, who trained with Tanaka, and sound artist Jim Denley perform Line in line, based on the installation Stone line by Richard Long.

Lecture by Jessica Morgan, Tate Modern curator Sun 22 May, 12.30pm
The Tate Modern is one of the world’s most visited and significant museums of modern and contemporary art. Jessica Morgan, Daskalopoulos curator of international art, discusses the development and display of the Tate’s collection.
