23 September 2011 – The Art Gallery of New South Wales today announced that its Contemporary Gallery App for iPad is now available on the App Store. The app, focused on the Gallery’s contemporary art and artists, gives users anytime, anywhere access to 24 of the most important Australian and international artists of our time. Artists include Shaun Gladwell, Simryn Gill, Rosemary Laing, Mike Parr, Jeff Koons, Christo, Ugo Rondinone and Sol LeWitt, among others.

The app is another step toward making the Gallery’s collection more accessible. Those who can’t easily visit the Gallery will be able to enjoy a rich viewing experience to explore and learn about their favourite works and artists using their iPad.

Produced and designed by the Gallery in association with local digital agency The Nest, the Contemporary Gallery App unlocks new ways for audiences to engage with artworks. The app allows users to zoom into images to see fine details, discover stories of the artists and the art, go behind the scenes with videos, listen to interviews with leading artists and Gallery curators, and learn simple explanations of art terms, including movements such as conceptual art and minimalism.

The artworks featured are selected from the first display in the new contemporary galleries at the Art Gallery of NSW and will be refreshed annually with each new hang.

The Contemporary Gallery App is available for free from the App Store on iPad or on the iTunes website.
