In memory of the late Eva Breuer, one of Australia’s most loved and prolific art dealers who made a significant contribution to Australian art in the 1980s and 90s, The Breuer Foundation has established an annual scholarship to be awarded to a young Australian female artist for the purpose of travel and study in Paris.

Art Gallery of NSW director Michael Brand said the Eva Breuer Travelling Art Scholarship is a fitting tribute to Eva Breuer, providing an outstanding opportunity to young Australian female artists to spend time creating art and studying overseas.

“The benefit of new perspectives for young artists cannot be underestimated. The Gallery is proud of our history offering travelling art scholarships and welcomes The Breuer Foundation’s generosity and support in providing young Australian female artists the chance to study in one of the world’s most vibrant and creative cities, and immerse themselves in its culture,” Brand said.

“The Gallery is also very pleased to work with The Breuer Foundation to select the scholarship winner each year,” Brand added.

The Breuer family said Eva would approve wholeheartedly of the Eva Breuer Travelling Art Scholarship.

“Eva worked very hard to raise the profile of many young Australian artists and had a particular interest in promoting the work of young female artists.

“This scholarship honours Eva’s memory and ensures the continuation of the important work undertaken during her lifetime to promote the artistic endeavours of young female artists,” Eva’s widower Tom Breuer said.

Close friend and colleague of Eva Breuer, art historian Lou Klepac also endorsed the scholarship saying Eva would be very happy with its creation.

“Eva thought big and this scholarship has been created in that same spirit. If Eva was with us she’d offer the same advice to young Australian female artists: think big,” Klepac said.

About the Eva Breuer Travelling Art Scholarship
The recipient of the scholarship will be chosen from one of the winners of the Art Gallery of New South Wales’s existing residency scholarships that are awarded to up to ten Australian artists each year. Recipients of the scholarships stay at one of two of the Art Gallery of NSW’s studios at the Cite International des Arts in Paris – either two months at the Moya Dyring Studio or three months at the Dr Denise Hickey Memorial Studio.

The Eva Breuer Scholarship will provide the winning artist, a female under the age of 35, a $25,000 stipend for travel and living expenses associated with their residency scholarship. The Scholarship will initially be offered annually for three years from 2015 to 2017. The winner of the Eva Breuer Travelling Art Scholarship will be announced in June 2015.

Applications for the Eva Breuer Travelling Art Scholarship are now open until 22 May 2015.
