2016 Archibald Prize: submissions open until 24 June 2016

Australia’s most celebrated art prize valued at $100,000

Entries are open until 24 June for the Archibald Prize 2016. Artists are invited to submit their entries online for the prize, valued at $100,000.

The prize will be awarded, in the terms of the will of the late JF Archibald dated 15 March 1916, to the best portrait ‘preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia during the 12 months preceding the date fixed by the Trustees for sending in the pictures’.

Entries in the Archibald Prize 2016 competition are eligible to be considered for the Packing Room Prize valued at $1500 and the People’s Choice award valued at $3500.

The Trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales also invite artists to submit paintings for the Wynne and Sulman Prizes valued this year at $50,000 and $40,000 respectively.

Wynne Prize entrants are also eligible for the Trustees’ Watercolour Prize valued at $5000 and the John & Elizabeth Newham Pring Memorial Prize valued at $1000 which may be awarded to the best watercolour by a female artist.

The total prize pool for the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes stands at $201,000.

Entry forms can be submitted until 24 June 2016.

Paintings in competition for the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes will be received at the Art Gallery of NSW from Monday 20 June to Friday 24 June 2016.

The finalists for the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes, and the prize winners, are selected by the Art Gallery of New South Wales Trustees. The Packing Room Prize is selected by Gallery staff. The People’s Choice is selected by members of the public visiting the exhibition of Archibald Prize finalists at the Gallery.

The Salon des Refusés is an exhibition of works that were not selected as finalists for the Archibald or Wynne Prizes, held at the SH Ervin Gallery, Sydney.
