The Art Gallery of New South Wales is pleased to announce a broadened partnership with Aqualand with the naming of the Atrium in its new building opening on 3 December 2022. This stunning architectural space that reaches 11 metres at its highest point will be known as the Aqualand Atrium.

At the heart of the new building, designed by Pritzker prize-winning architects SANAA, the Aqualand Atrium is a key space for visitors to enjoy art and architecture with major collection works displayed on the rammed earth wall and in the sculpture gallery. Located on lower level 2, the Atrium is also where visitors will gather to enter the major exhibition gallery and descend the spiral stairs to the spectacular Tank space among other new art experiences.

The new building is the centrepiece of the 151-year-old Art Gallery’s transformation and expansion into an art museum campus with two buildings connected by an art garden.

Aqualand’s Leadership partnership builds on its support of the Art Gallery commencing in 2016 as Presenting partner of Tang: treasures from the Silk Road capital followed by the inaugural The National exhibition in 2017 showcasing Australian contemporary art.

Art Gallery of New South Wales director Michael Brand said: “We’re deeply grateful to Aqualand for partnering with us to support the Sydney Modern Project, which is the largest cultural development to open in the city in half a century. The Aqualand Atrium is an important and central space in our new building that showcases major artworks and commissions.

“Our generous community of donors, partners and sponsors have played a key role in enabling the Art Gallery to attract new audiences to experience great art and programs in new ways.”

Aqualand managing director Jin Lin said: “We’re proud to be a leadership partner of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and to support its exciting expansion as an ongoing investment in Australian arts and culture.

“As a property, hospitality and investment company, Aqualand prides itself on pushing creative boundaries and we’re delighted to support the incredible opportunities being offered for artists and audiences through the Sydney Modern Project.

“Supporting culture and the arts is deeply rooted in our DNA and we see great synergy between the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Aqualand. We’re very proud of our long-term partnerships with cultural organisations that make art accessible to all, which also includes Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi. It makes me extremely proud to know we’re helping to leave a legacy for future generations to experience and appreciate all the forms of art that will be showcased in this amazing new cultural destination.”
